It’s one of the worst things about the eroosin of tenure at our public institutions. It's a teaching position. A job. An important one. But one that you should be held accountable for how you do it. Less and less people, if any at all, should be given any kind of tenure. No matter what field you're in, it's all to easy to become complacent, and a concept such as tenure is a huge incentive for complacency. No, like the rest of us that have to demonstrate our value to the people who are paying for us, we should have to work every day as though our job depended on it and should not get a near-guarantee at employment into the future simply because of what we did a few years ago.
