Week 3 – 1/24/16
Love Speaks the Truth
Speaking the truth in love… The Bible says that it is kindness that leads to repentance. Often it is kinder to confront than to walk away. I can tell you firsthand how important this expression of love is. I have been on the receiving end of loving correction and it saved my life!
When a brother or sister strays away from the path of life (or is veering away even slightly with misguided thinking), it is important to reach out to them and remind them of the Truth. They may already feel isolated or alienated because of their actions, but if we walk away from them, they might continue to go further and further down the wrong path until they are separated from God completely! Our hesitation to speak the Truth into their lives could have eternal consequences.
“My dear friends, if you know people who have wandered off from God’s truth, don’t write them off. Go after them. Get them back and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God.” (James 5: 19-20 MSG)
I cannot stress enough, though, about the need to speak in love. If we speak from a place of anger, condemnation, hatred, or judgment (or even just hurt or frustration), it can cause even more damage or push them further away. We need to check our motivations and be fully immersed in the Lord’s love and grace before speaking, knowing that we all sin and fall short of the glory of God; it just manifests in different ways. For “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a [great big] plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:4)
We must speak the truth in love and with great humility. It can change the direction of a life forever!
